What is Nitrox?

Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx), simply explained

Enriched Air Nitrox, or EANx, is a breathing gas made up of oxygen and nitrogen with more oxygen than compressed air, which contains around 21%. Common mixes are EAN32 with 32% oxygen and EAN36 with 36%.

Less nitrogen can mean longer no-decompression limits on suitable profiles. At the same time, more oxygen brings specific limits: oxygen partial pressure, maximum operating depth (MOD), gas analysis and dive planning are therefore central topics in Nitrox eLearning.

More background information: What is Nitrox?, Oxygen limits and MOD and Planning Nitrox dives.

EAN32 and EAN36 The most common Nitrox mixes contain 32% and 36% oxygen respectively.
Less nitrogen Less nitrogen in the breathing gas can offer advantages in no-decompression time.
Oxygen partial pressure It limits the depth at which a mix can be breathed safely.
Maximum operating depth The higher the oxygen percentage, the shallower the MOD.

ProNRC Nitrox online course FAQ

This eLearning course teaches the fundamentals of Nitrox diving. Work through structured lessons at your own pace, complete knowledge checks and receive personal support.

Enriched Air Nitrox contains more oxygen than compressed air, which has around 21%. EAN32 contains 32% and EAN36 36% oxygen, with correspondingly less nitrogen.

No. Nitrox can extend no-decompression limits on suitable profiles, but does not allow deeper diving. Its higher oxygen percentage reduces maximum operating depth: every mix has a MOD that must not be exceeded.

Oxygen partial pressure depends on the gas's oxygen fraction and ambient pressure, and increases with depth. Maximum operating depth (MOD) is where a specified limit is reached. At 1.4 bar, the calculated MOD is 33.75 metres for EAN32 and approximately 28.89 metres for EAN36, assuming 1 bar at the surface plus 1 bar per 10 metres. These figures are not authorisation to dive and must not be rounded upwards when setting a depth limit.

You need a diving certification from a recognised training organisation. ProNRC certification is issued once all requirements of the ProNRC training standards have been met.

The ProNRC course (€119) uses our own platform; the PADI Nitrox course (€199) uses official PADI eLearning. Each follows its organisation's requirements. Find out more on the PADI Nitrox page.

The ProNRC Nitrox online course is available in German only. Translating this information website does not change the course language.

If you want to take your Nitrox course in another language, we recommend our PADI Nitrox online course.

Book the course using our booking form. Access to the existing ProNRC platform is provided after verified payment. Payment alone is not certification: the physical ProNRC card is processed only after successful completion and verification of the certification requirements.

No. Our online Nitrox courses are theory-only courses. You study the theoretical content online. No practical dives are included or required as part of our online courses. The applicable prerequisites and certification requirements remain unchanged.
